Mr. Roy Strickland
Mr. Roy Strickland, passed away on Tuesday, September 15, 2020 in Atlanta, Georgia. Graveside services were held on Sunday, September 20, 2020 at 12 noon at Sand Hill Baptist Church with Rev. Jerry Walden officiating.
Roy was born on June 11, 1949 to the late Mr. Ira and Mrs. Annie Maude Strickland in Washington County, Georgia. He was the third child of thirteen siblings. The family relocated to Wrightsville, Georgia when Roy was at a very young age.
Roy attended Dock Kemp Elementary School but was unable to complete school due to assisting his father in working and caring for the family. Roy worked for several lumber companies. He also went into a small business on his own, trading pulp wood. His final employment was with Keyton Lumber where he was the major cutter. Roy always took pride in his work and would tell individuals no one could cut lumber fast like him.
On January 2, 2004, Roy married Ms. Charlene King, affectionately known as Lene. This was a special union of the country and city coming together. Roy and Lene were blessed to have sixteen inspiring years together.
He became a member of Sand Hill Missionary Baptist Church in 2004 and accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal Savior. Roy was a dedicated member at Sand Hill. He loved Rev. Jerry and Mrs. Katherine Walden and his church family. Sunday school, church services, quartet singing and praying with individuals was something Roy enjoyed to the fullest. His favorite song was “You Don’t Know What The Lord Told Me.”
The loss of Roy’s eyesight did not stop him from giving accurate directions to individuals anywhere in Georgia, from fishing, cleaning and cooking the fish, making his own deer sausages and buying and trading other merchandise with others. One of his major accomplishments was winning four awards for the Brunswick Stew Contest in the Wrightsville area. Roy would not accept anyone telling him what he could not do! He took his disability and turned it into a ‘victorious ability’ for him and many others.
He was preceded in death by his father; Mr. Ira Strickland; mother, Mrs. Annie Maude Strickland; five brothers: Mr. Horace Strickland, Mr. Josh Strickland, Mr. Joe Strickland, Mr. Ira Strickland, Jr., Mr. Alien Strickland; three sisters: Ms. Alice Strickland, Ms. Betty Strickland, and Ms. Lennie Mae Strickland.
