Mr. J. Finley May, Sr.


Mr. J. Finley May, Sr., passed away on Friday, September 1, 2023 at Heritage Inn Nursing Home. Funeral services were held on Thursday, September 7, 2023 at 4:00 P.M. at Minton Spring A.M.E. Church with Rev. Melvin Farmer officiating. Interment was held in the church cemetery.


Mr. J Findley May was born February 25, 1930 in Sandersville, Washington County, Georgia to the late Mr. Charlie Herman May, Sr. and the late Ms. Alberta King.


J succumbed to cancer while residing at Heritage Inn of Sandersville on Friday, September 1, 2023.


J’s favorite pastimes were fishing and traveling. He loves James Brown, playing checkers, gardening and watermelon. His favorite color was red. Whenever it was time to go somewhere special, he “cleaned up nice.”


One of his proudest accomplishments was attending the Million Man March, a large gathering of African-American men in Washington D.C., to champion black civil rights and unity.


J was a contractor for many years in South Bend, Indiana and New York City.


He was preceded in death by his brothers: Mr. Charlie Harman May, Jr., Mr. Andrew Lawrence May, Mr. Lee Ander May, Sr. and his grandson: Mr. Jessie Alan Harris.


Mr. May leaves cherished memories to his children: Mrs. Deborah May-Lester, Ms. Hilda Harris, Ms. Latricia Dean May, Ms. Julie Lee, Mr. J Findley May, Jr., Ms. Darlene Geneva Lanier, Mr. Leonard Markham, Mr. Deon Markham, Mrs. Alberta Okoro, Mr. Corey May, Mr. Shaun MacNeal; twenty-three grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
