Ms. Martha Spikes


Ms. Martha Spikes passed away on Wednesday, May 17, 2023 at Fairview Park Hospital. Graveside services were held on Monday, May 22, 2023 at 11:00 A.M. at Woodlawn City Cemetery, Sandersville, Georgia with Rev. Jerry Walden, officiating.


Martha, affectionately known as Mot, was born on June 4, 1935 in Washington County, Georgia to the parentage of the late Willie Madison and the late Clemmie Madison. She was preceded in death by her twin sister, Mary Taylor.


She was reared and educated in Washington County, Georgia school system. She was a 1954 graduate and an avid basketball player at T. J. Elder High School.


At an early age she joined Robin Spring Baptist Church. She was a faithful choir member for many years.

Martha was employed at several sewing factories in the county to include Royal Manufacturing Company and William Carter Manufacturing Company. She retired from Winn Dixie Food Store as a General Merchandise Manager.


Her hobbies included canning fruits and vegetables and cooking her famous sweet potato pies. She enjoyed gardening and loved fishing. She enjoyed listening to gospel music. The Canton Spirituals was her favorite group.


Martha leaves to mourn and cherish her memories, three sisters: Mrs. Sallie Swint, Yeadon, Pennsylvania, Mrs. Rollena Ray, Sandersville, Georgia and Mrs. Clemmie (Richard) Sanford, Prince George, Virginia. She was loved by a host of nieces and nephews; caregivers: devoted niece, Ms. Jan Ray; nephew, Mr. David Ray; other relatives and friends including cousins, Mr. Henry Watts, Mr. Clarence (Elizabeth) Watts, Mr. Fred Watts, Ms. Dorothy Jean Spencer and Ms. Gladys Butts.
