Mr. Sammy L. Thomas, Sr.




Mr. Sammy L. Thomas, Sr. passed away on Thursday, January 9, 2025 at Washington County Regional Medical Center. Funeral services were held on Saturday, January 18, 2025 at 1:00 P.M. at Robin Spring Baptist Church with Elder Willie Brown officiating. Interment was held in Brownwood Cemetery.


On the morning of January 9, 2025, after a brief illness, Sammy departed this life at Washington County Regional Medical Center.


Mr. Thomas was educated in the Washington County School System and graduated from T.J. Elder High School in 1970. He was a member of Bold Springs Missionary Baptist Church of Sandersville, Georgia.


Sammy wed his childhood sweetheart, Ms. Mary Julia Brown, on July 29, 1985. Together, they raised three beautiful children, Marcus, Sammy, Jr. and Felicia.


He was employed at Lapp Insulators, LLC from 1970 until 2003, during which time he worked as a foreman. From 2003 until his retirement in 2017, he was employed at B.H. Transfer as a long-haul truck driver where his coworkers knew him as “The Untouchable.” After his retirement, Sammy spent most of his time with his family. On any given Sunday, he could be found in his recliner watching sports and arguing with the coaches, through the television.


Mr. Thomas leaves to cherish a lifetime of memories, his wife of thirty nine (39) years: Mrs. Mary Julia Thomas, Sandersville, Georgia; children: Dr. Marcus (Kim) Brown, Alpharetta, Georgia, Dr. Sonya (Kevin) Coley, Macon, Georgia, U.S. Navy CPO, Ret. Sammy (Belinda) Thomas, Jr., Snellville, Georgia, Mr. Kenneth (Jerri) Thomas, McDonough, Georgia, Ms. Felicia Thomas, Sandersville, Georgia; grandchildren: Jermekia (Edward), Felexia, Akayla, Kendall, Faithia, Frederick, Kennedy, Jourdan, Mason, Morgan; great-grandchildren: London, Braxton, Bryson, Wave; mother: Mrs. Rosetta (R.C.) Smith, Canton, Ohio; sisters: Ms. Cheryl Jeter, Canton, Ohio, Ms. Charley Rene Cooper, Sandersville, Georgia; brother: Mr. Gary Thomas, Harrison, Georgia, Mr. Hayward Smith, Wichita, Kansas, Mr. Gary Smith, Dallas, Texas; aunts: Ms. Millerine Thomas, Ms. Annie Julia Johnson, Ms. Vassie Hatcher, Ms. Elizabeth Sanders; sisters-in-law: Ms. Lee Vertis Brown, Milledgeville, Georgia, Ms. Delois Brown, Ms. Jean Brown, West Palm Beach, Florida, Mrs. Annie (James) Brown, Tennille, Georgia; brothers-in-law: Elder Willie (Vicki) Brown, Fayetteville, Georgia, Mr. Chris (Stacie) Brown, West Palm Beach, Florida; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
